The Highland Pony Society supports artificial insemination (AI) as a viable breeding option. Several licensed stallions can provide semen for AI, giving breeders greater flexibility in their breeding programmes.
HPS Supports AI Breeding
Foals conceived through artificial insemination are fully eligible for registration in the Highland Pony Stud Book, subject to normal registration requirements and rules.

How to Arrange AI
Find a Suitable Stallion
Browse the Stallion Directory and filter by AI availability to find licensed stallions whose owners offer semen for artificial insemination.
Contact the Stallion Owner
Reach out to the stallion owner directly to discuss availability, fees, and arrangements for semen collection and shipping.
Arrange Collection and Delivery
Work with your vet and the stallion owner to coordinate timing, collection, and transport of semen to your mare.
Complete the Insemination
Your veterinarian will perform the insemination procedure and monitor your mare for conception.
Register the Foal
When your foal is born, register with the Society following standard registration procedures. AI-bred foals are fully eligible for registration.

- Veterinary involvement: AI should be carried out by a qualified veterinarian with experience in equine reproduction.
- Timing is critical: Success rates depend on accurate timing of insemination relative to ovulation.
- Stallion eligibility: Only semen from HPS licensed stallions can be used to produce foals eligible for registration.
