Registration Process
Complete the Online Form & Pay
Fill in breeder, pedigree, and foal details online and pay the registration fee. If the dam is Appendix A, B, or C and the foal is a filly, an inspection will also be required.
Obtain Service Certificate
If you don't own the stallion, obtain a service certificate from the stallion owner confirming the breeding.
Download & Take to Your Vet
After submission you'll receive a partially-populated form. Your vet completes the microchip number, diagrams, and their verification section at the foal's inspection.
Post the Signed Form to the Office
Return the vet-completed, signed form to the Society office. HPS staff verify the pedigree and issue the passport and registration certificate.
Required Documentation
- Online form completed with accurate dam and sire registration numbers
- Service certificate from stallion owner (unless you own the stallion)
- Vet-completed section with microchip number, diagrams, and signature on the downloaded form
- Payment of registration fee (collected online at step 1)
- For Appendix A/B/C filly foals: inspection by an HPS-approved inspector
Important Deadlines
30th November - Primary Deadline
Applications submitted by this date are guaranteed entry in the current year's Stud Book.
Within 6 Months of Foaling
Applications within six months of the foaling date after year-end avoid late fees.
Late Registration
After the grace period, double fees apply and Council approval is required.
Subsidised Registration: Foal registration for members is subsidised at £20 (non-members £80) through funding from the Horserace Betting Levy Board. Late registrations are £50 (members) or £100 (non-members). This subsidy helps ensure accurate record-keeping and promotes the welfare of the Highland Pony breed.
Important: Check Your Documents
Upon receiving your registration documents, it is your responsibility to check the dates and data thereon and inform the office immediately if there is an error. Forms without microchip bar code labels will be returned.

Part-Bred Highland Ponies
Part-bred Highland Ponies have one parent that is a registered Highland Pony and one parent of a different breed. Part-breds are now handled through the ID Only Passport (Including Part Breds) form, which covers identification and part-bred registration in a single application.
