Veterinary Examination

An independent veterinary surgeon—not from the owner's usual practice and qualified for at least two years—conducts the inspection. The owner covers veterinary costs.

The examination assesses:

Conformational soundness
Assessment for hereditary defects
Tooth occlusion (parrot mouth disqualifies)
Limb structure and action
Testicular development and descent
Respiratory function

Note: Parrot mouth (undershot or overshot jaw) automatically disqualifies a stallion from licensing.

DNA Testing

Hair samples undergo DNA profiling with parentage testing. The Society covers Weatherbys' fees; sample collection costs fall to the owner.

Timeline & Appeals

Processing Time

The licensing process typically takes over four weeks. Licences are issued once both the inspection and DNA results are complete.

Appeals

Owners may appeal a refusal within one month by paying an additional £200 fee. This fee is refundable if the appeal is successful.
